DEVELOPING READING HABIT AMONG CHILDREN BY PLAY WAY METHOD
We are living in the world of ‘Globalisation’.In the present era of information explosion, libraries can play an important role to provide an eassy access to information.Library is not merely a collection of books but a center of personality development and place where one can shape his career and life.Library also plays an important role in education –‘there is no education without library and there is no library without education’.Therefore,we must make use of library to facilitate our education.
The base of our education starts with elementary education. Therefore, children’s library plays a vital role to satisfy every query raised by little wonders.According to Sharyn Mc Crumb “A children’s library is a window to the past and a pathway to future”.It also perpapers a child to become a good and aware citizen of future. There is nothing to say “Future of our nation is being constructed in our school libraries”. Use of library can make children better human beings. For this purpose, children must be motivated by the librarians, teachers and parents to make the maximum use of libraries.
  What is children’s library-
“A library which caters to the needs of children is called children’s library.” In other words, it equips a child with lifelong learning skills.United Nation has declared the “Right of the child to free and open access to information material.”
Readers of children’s library can be covered under different age groups as follows-
Children of age group-6 to 10 years-
According to the child psychologists ‘read loud ‘ books to infants has an effect on their behavioural pattern in future.Little children also love to stories which have more pictures and a small text part. To make the story telling interesting,it should be narrated with expressions by the librarian, which will definitely create interest among the children to listen more and more stories. Children of this group are capable to read the books themselves.Colourful books with illustrations in a very easy language facilitate their reading. The subject of the book which is issued to the child must relate to his surroundings-e.g.annimals,plants,trees,flowers etc.
Children of age group-11-15 years-
Children between 11-15 years have mature vision, hencebooksondifferentsubjectslikehonesty, tolerance, friendship, love for nature, our customs and traditions, festivals, save our environment, out duties for nation, mythological books and many more can create the sense of belongingness among children.
Special children-
Children with physical disability are covered under special children.Visually challenged children need Braille with three dimensional illustrations as well as audio books. Children with hearing problems can be facilitated with visuals.
Developing reading habit among children by play way method-
Information revolution has effected a lot in the present era. Use of computers has become prime demand to fulfill the qeuries of children. Therefore, to develop reading habit amomg children different play way methods should be adopted so that children feel lively atmosphere in the library.
Game-1- In this game different knowledge based questions are written on different piece of paper. Then the children play the game ‘passing the parcel’ and defaulter picks up one piece of paper and reads out the question and tries to get the answer from library.
Game-2- In this game children asked different riddles based on animals, leaders, birds, parts of human body, our surrounding etc.
Game-3- This game based on finding out the hidden words from a square-up,down,horizontally,diagonally.
Game-4- In this game students are divided in 4 groups and they are given a short story with few questions, all the students have to read the story and answer the questions followed by group discussion.
Game-5- Memory game:- In this game, each student speaks a word in context of the earlier words which can make a meaningfull sentence.
Game-6-Like ‘antakshari’spelling game can also be payed.

    • Learning outcome through games-

Working in group
Development of mental ablity
Habit of self study
Ceativity
Children’s library should motivate young readers which make children better citizens. Apart from the above mentioned play way methods different type of competitions can be organized for children like story telling, story writing, poetry writing, play acting etc. To develop reading habits among children the set up of library can be formed at any convenient place for children like park, shop, bus stop, railway station etc.where children can enjoy the wonderful world of books.
